I am a 30-year-old mama to a girl and a boy. I grew up in Northern Virginia with my parents and younger sister and graduated from George Mason University in 2008 with a BFA. Art had my attention during those years but I still longed to figure out how my obsession with healthcare literature and anatomy fit into the art world – I strongly considered becoming a medical illustrator.
During college I met my husband, Ryan, while working in the same local restaurant. We were admittedly crazy about each other and moved in together in spring of 2007 – then soon after Ryan proposed in July, and we were married without hesitation on October 10, 2008 in Fairfax, VA.
In the spring of ’09 we decided to pack up and start an adventure in Charlotte, North Carolina. We loved living in Charlotte, bought a house in the ‘burbs and in January 2012 found out we were pregnant! We began care with midwives in Fort Mill, South Carolina. This decision was perfect for our family and we were delighted to welcome a healthy little girl on October 1st, 2012, only a handful of hours before Ryan’s own birthday. By November of that year I took my first birth doula training through Dar la Luz in Spartansburg, SC. I began getting acquainted with the birth community, but before long we decided to add a little more fun to the mix and our sweet son was born, again in the presence of midwives, on April 13th, 2014.
Since then I have attended doula births in every hospital and in many homes in the Greater Charlotte area – serving women and their families through such an inspiring and amazing transition into parenthood – whether is it their first child or their sixth, and in all of it I am never less humbled and less grateful to be in their presence.
